Everywhere, nowhere, somewhere in between, 2024
Photo on fabric and paper with acrylic paint, format 80x210 cm (on photo you see the back and front of the artwork)
Two different backsides of myself. The back with trench coat is a photo print on canvas and the other back is a photo print on thin woven fabric. I sewed both together by hand. The suitcases are photo prints and acrylic paint on paper and hang with transparent threads together with the partially transparent canvas on a wooden slat.
The two suitcases in the artwork. The large (brown) suitcase is the suitcase with which my father came from Curaçao to the Netherlands in 1963 to study. With the other suitcase, a Samonite, I traveled annually between the Netherlands and Curaçao from 1978 to 1992.
Edouard Glissant's work on creolization is a source of inspiration for this artwork. Creolization as a movement taking place throughout the globalized world. It is about an identity that is no longer built on origin, affiliation and tradition, but from fragmentation, distribution and coincidence.
I find it interesting how and why an identity is formed. In this confusing times, with war and climate change, many people will be forced to leave their country and culture. What are you taking with you?
